Below you will find assignment instructions and links to tutorials. You will also find a summary of assignments including links to warmups.

Use information from the following Internet sites to complete your Network vocabulary:

Assignments

1.  Topology Drawings - 3 slides
  • Use Power Point, blank presentation, blank slide
  • Draw a minimum of five computers on each slide (using symbols or clipart)
  • Connect them in a star, bus, or ring topology (one topology on each slide)
  • Label the topology
  • Label the medium
  • List three advantages of the typology
  • List three advantages of the medium
  • List two disadvantages of the typology
  • List two disadvantages of the medium
  • Your name needs to be typed on one of the slides
  • Print in handout format, 3 slides per page (file, print, print what? change from slides to handouts, 3)
2.  Medium/Media chart - Excel or Word Table
  • Create a table/chart listing the three mediums studied
  • List three advantages of each
  • List two disadvantages of each
3.  Vocabulary list completed

4.  Floor plan - hand drawn

  • Using an existing floorplan, draw a computer symbol in four different locations and a server in a secure location.
  • Connect the computers in a topology of your choice, label the medium (your choice)
  • List on the drawing three advantages of the topology and medium selected
5. Business in Power Point
  • Open the Power Point file floorplan2 which is in your startup folder
  • Slide 2
    • The name of the business is CATS
    • Using the information on the floorplan, count the number of employees
    • Count the number of computers
    • Decide how many printers, scanners and other peripherals you want to have in the business
    • Record these numbers on slide 2
  • Slide 3
    • Use the information from your hardware shopping and select one of the computer stations for the business
    • Record the basic specifications
  • Slide 4
    • The network operating system (NOS) at the high school is Novell. You may record Novell or another NOS you are familiar with
    • The operating system (OS) on the high school computers is Windows 98. You may record Windows 98 or another OS you are familiar with
    • List the software applications that you would want on these computers to do the different types of documents
    • List any other software you might want such as Quicken or Peachtree Accounting for financial documents, Photo Shop for marketing pictures, etc.
  • Slide 5
    • Draw or label these items on your floorplan
    • You may delete the no. of computers and no. of employee labels on the first slide.
    • You may not alter the no. of computers nor the no. of employees
  • Slide 6
    • Replace the title with your favorite topology
    • List only the good things about this topology
  • Slide 7
    • Record the two topologies you did not select
    • List the disadvantages (why you did not select) of these topologies
  • Slide 8
    • Replace the title with your favorite medium
    • List only the good things about this medium
  • Slide 9
    • Record the two mediums you did not select
    • List the disadvantages (why you did not select) of these mediums
  • Follow the instructions and add all required information and diagrams
  • Print as handouts, six slides to a page (file, print, print what? change from slides to handouts)
