Vocabulary Review

After researching and generating a vocabulary list, students in the Computers and Technology (CATS) classes selected the following terms as the ones they should know.  They also wrote the definitions in their own words.  This list is used for review and as a study guide for a quiz.

Internet
global connection of computers and not owned by anyone

Intranet
local connection of computers and is usually password protected

WWW
World Wide Web

Hypertext
text to click on and be connected to another computer or file

URL
Uniform Resource Locator, unique address

Browser
Software package that allows you to view and link throughout the Internet

Telnet
connecting to a remote computer

Virus
program written to change, delete, or rewrite software in a destructive manner

Cookie
software that is placed on your computer from an Internet site to collect personal information about you

Pirated
sharing copies of licensed software without purchasing

Netiquette
WWW manners

Spam
massive mailings of junk mail

Hackers
programmers who deliberately break security codes

Spoofing
forgery on the Internet

GIF
graphic files on the Internet

Download
the transfer of files from a remote computer to your computer
