Please join us for the Brunswick High School PTSA meeting tomorrow night, Wednesday September 5 at 7pm in the BHS Media Center.  The meeting will last no longer than one hour.

At this meeting we will continue to set priorities for the coming school year and plan activities that support those priorities.  Your ideas are needed to make sure that the programs that we plan are what the BHS community really needs. We will discuss and plan the upcoming school year's teacher/staff appreciation events, specific ways we can support our teachers and staff, and small fund-raising opportunities.  The funds raised are used to help thank and support our school's teachers, provide additional support for academics, and beautify the school grounds. Many hands make light work, so if you are interested in helping out, please come and share your ideas and help plan the upcoming year. Feel free to contact me anytime at bhs_ptsa@comcast.net.

Below is some information from the FCPS BOE regarding the Superintendent's Recommended Educational Facilities Master Plan.  A public hearing to receive comment on the Recommended Plan is scheduled for next Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at the Central Offices located at 115 E. Church Street in Frederick following the regularly scheduled BOE meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you Wednesday night!

Information about the Superintendent’s Recommended Educational Facilities Master Plan:

The annual update of the Educational Facilities Master Plan (EFMP) is now available on the FCPS web page at www.fcps.org under Recent Publications on the home page or under Special Reports on the Facilities Services page.  Printed copies of this document will be available from our offices after September 1st and at the public hearing on September 12th.

The EFMP is anticipating an increase of approximately 6,575 students between 2006 and 2016.  This is less than what occurred in the 1990's but greater than any other previous decade in Frederick County's history.  By 2016, the school system is anticipated to have approximately 46,314 students.

This document contains a list of school construction projects that Staff has recommended for the next ten years. There are a total of 24 major construction projects included over the ten-year time frame.  These include 5 new schools, 1 replacement school, 14 additions and 5 modernization projects.  While the Board of Education continues to address capacity, they have directed staff to place a greater priority on renovating our older schools.  In addition to these major projects, 136 "systemic renovation" projects are proposed.  Systemic projects include a variety of upgrades to individual schools, including flooring repair, roof renovations and mechanical system upgrades.

A public hearing to receive comment on the Superintendent's Recommended Plan is scheduled for Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at the Central Offices located at 115 E. Church Street in Frederick following the regularly scheduled BOE meeting

After receipt of public comment, the Board will make final decisions regarding the Plan's recommendations.  The final version of the EFMP will then be forwarded to the County Commissioners and the State of Maryland for funding consideration.

A few house cleaning items:

  • Please let me know if you’d like to be removed from this email list if you no longer have students at BHS. I cleaned up my email list as best as possible, but I’m sure I’ve missed a few.
  • Adelphia to Comcast users – please let me know your updated email addresses!
  • Remember that as we start the new school year to record your volunteer hours.  At then end of the year you should send the total volunteer hours for any BHS time to Jill Wilton at Jill.Wilton@fcps.org. Remember to include ALL your BHS volunteer hours… anything that was volunteering for BHS counts – PTSA, band, drama, sports, classroom, office, etc…

Looking forward to seeing you!

Want to FIND OUT FIRST about BHS?

The PTSA has its own version of Find Out First concerning important information about Brunswick High, primarily academic programs and meetings. To join this email distribution, send your name and email address (along with number of children at BHS and their grades – no student names needed) to bhsptsa@adelphia.net. This list is confidential and you will receive no more than an average of one message per month. A recent example is a reminder to everyone in late January concerning the February 1 “Meet the Teachers” meeting and all the registration information sessions in case they missed the school’s distribution of this information.
